The Basics of Typography: A Quick Guide for Beginners

Typefaces & Fonts

The headline is bold, large, and grabs your attention, while the article text is smaller and easier to read for long periods. That’s hierarchy in action. It guides the reader’s eye and ensures the most important information stands out. You can create hierarchy with size, weight, or even color.

Spacing

Third, spacing. Great typography isn’t just about the letters themselves—it’s about the space around them. This includes kerning (the space between individual letters), tracking (the space between groups of letters), and leading (the space between lines of text). Proper spacing makes your text readable and visually appealing. Too little space can feel cramped, while too much can make things look disconnected.

Typography is a subtle art, but its impact is massive. Good typography draws readers in, makes content more accessible, and adds an emotional layer to your message.
